The tea or coffee maker has a freshwater container with a filling level display, coupled to a through-flow water heater with a riser pipe (25) leading to a filter unit positioned above a reception jug. The riser pipe (25) is made of a transparent material for acting simultaneously as the visual display for the freshwater filling level. Pref. the riser pipe (25) extends parallel to the vertical side edge of the freshwater container and has a series of spaced level markings (30), its top end projecting into a cover (40) which feeds the hot water to an outlet (42) positioned above the filter unit.
