The present invention relates to a process for correcting misalignment of steel bands circulating about a continuously operating press and to a press adapted for such correction of misalignment. The press has a fixed press bed and a movable press top and a pair of endless flexible steel bands circulating around the press bed and the press top and defining a press gap between them having a high pressure zone, a medium pressure zone and a low pressure zone. The press top is flexible, at least in the high pressure zone, the flexing being controlled by piston and cylinder assemblies arranged on opposite longitudinal sides of the press. The bands pass over driven and deflection rollers on opposite sides of the press gap and at least one of the rollers is adjustable so that its axis of rotation can be moved. When realignment of one of the steel bands is required, the short stroke piston and cylinder assemblies are operated on one side of the press to reduce pressure on the band at that side, and then the axis of rotation of the adjustable roller is moved to cause the desired realignment. In this way, stretching and deformation of the band during realignment can be avoided. |
