Organic isocyanates are prepared by contacting an N-substituted carbamoyl halide with a Lewis base, of basicity no greater than HCONMe2 which is inert towards isocyanates, and separating the product from the hydrohalide of the Lewis base. Suitable such bases are, e.g., HCONMe2, AcNMe2 and 1-acetylpiperidine. Specified products are phenyl-, 4-chlorophenyl-, 1,4-phenylenedi-, toluene-2,4-di-, butane-1,4-di- and hexane-1,6-di-isocyanates. |
