PURPOSE:To provide rayon fiber insoluble in water with high water absorption and water vapor absorption by treating rayon fiber with an alkali in a solvent having a specific composition, carboxymethylating the rayon fiber in a solvent having a specific composition and adjusting substitution degree of carboxymethyl group and glycol group to specific ranges, respectively. CONSTITUTION:Rayon fiber is treated with an alkali using caustic soda in a reaction solvent comprising 50-100wt.% water and 50-0wt.% organic solvent such as ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, etc. Then the rayon fiber is carboxymethylated in a reaction solvent comprising 0-50wt.% water and 100-50wt.% of the organic solvent and adjusted to satisfy 1-0.4 total substitution degree of carboxymethyl group and (substitution degree at 6-position)/(total substitution degree) >=0.39 substitution degree of glucose residue at the 6-position. |
