摘要 PURPOSE: To make it possible to obtain a modulator including an org. nonlinear optical component by forming channels which are branched from common input light and extend under substantially the same optical length and constituting the modulation of two waveguide channels to reconverge the light to common output light. CONSTITUTION: An interferometer 10 is composed of the transparent nonlinear optical polymer film component 11 on a supporting base material. The film 11 and an input optical waveguide 12 have such a combined shape that splits the light power input 20 branched to a Y by 14 and randomly polarized between the optical path channel 22 and the optical path channel 23. The light propagating along the channels 22 and 23 is reconverged via the Y branch 15 and is emitted as a light output 21 from the waveguide 16. The polymer film of the waveguide channel has a refractive index higher than the refractive index of the polymer film adjacent to the waveguide channel and has the refractive index higher than the refractive index of a buffer coating when the film is used as a protective layer. As a result, the modulator contg. the org. nonlinear optical component is obtd.
