Process for the preparation of N-cyclopropyl quinolones of formula I which are prepared by reacting quinolones of formula II with triflates of formula III in the presence of a tertiary base. <IMAGE> <IMAGE> R1 can be hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, substituted cyclopropyl, R2 chlorine, fluorine or a 1-piperacinyl, R3 is hydrogen, ethyl or trimethylsilyl and R is selected from hydrogen, cyano, carboxy or carboxy derivative. Alternatively I is obtained from the reaction of III with II, where R2 is chlorine, and then with a piperazine.
