PURPOSE:To obtain a medium having little noise, good corrosion resistance and high coercive force by forming a Cr base layer of specified thickness on a nonmagnetic substrate and growing a composition comprising specified proportions of Cr, Ta and Co by vapor deposition on the Cr base layer. CONSTITUTION:A base layer comprising Cr metal or Cr alloy having 300-1000Angstrom thickness is formed on a nonmagnetic substrate. Then, a magnetic recording layer with compsn. of 5-15 at% Cr, 1-8 at% Ta and the balance substantially Co is formed on the Cr base layer in a manner that the axis of easy magnetization of the recording layer is oriented along the substrate plane. Thereby, even when the Cr or Cr-alloy layer between the substrate and the magnetic layer is thin, the obtd. medium has little noise, good corrosion resistance and high coercive force. |
