An hydraulically operated up-cut guillotine shear has an hydraulically operated toggle mechanism for lifting the upper blade, independently of the lower blade, away from the plane of feed and support of the workpiece, to allow a workpiece the leading end of which is curled, to enter the shear. The lower blade 6, which is inclined at an angle to the upper blade, is raised to make the cut by two hydraulic cylinders 12 mounted in a base 2. The upper blade 10 is mounted in a cross-beam 8 which at each end is pivotally attached at 25 to one arm 16 of a bell-crank 24. The middle of the bell crank is connected by a pivot pin 22 to the top of an arm 15, which at its lower end is pivotally attached to the base 2 by an axle 18. The other arm 26 of the bell crank is connected by a pivot pin 28 to the piston of an hydraulic cylinder 34, and the cylinder itself is pivotally attached to the link 15. When the cylinder 34 is fully extended the toggle links 15 and 16 are in line and the upper blade 10 is in its lowest position. To raise the upper blade 10, the piston is retracted into the cylinder 34, the links 15 swing outwards and the bell cranks rotate to lift the cross-beam 8, Fig. 3 (not shown). The links 15 also form the side members of the shear frame. Hydraulic pressure is maintained in the lower ends of the cylinders 34 to resist the cutting forces, during the cut.</p>
