The display system is fed with a standard composite video signal which includes synchronisation and black level `flyback` blanking signals. The video signal is fed to the amplifier (3) via a control circuit (2) which contains a black-level suppression circuit (2a). The video amplifier (3) contains a blanking signal level attenuator (6) and an output amplifier (4) which feeds the `Z` signal (Ve) to the cathode of the picture tube (5).
