The present invention relates to an apparatus that can be trailer-drawn along the working front of the winding units of an automatic reeling machine and the said trailer-drawn apparatus comprises: - an optical sensor element for detecting the axial position of unwinding of the yarn from the unwinding spools arranged along the winding units; and - means for monitoring the winding of individual winding units in order to adjust the speed at which the yarn is connected in accordance with a signal supplied by the said optical sensor element detecting the axial position of unwinding of the yarn from the unwinding spools.
