PURPOSE:To obtain the subject substance by reacting benzene with n-butene using a liquid AlCl3 complex catalyst in an amount at a specific ratio thereof to that of the benzene within a specified temperature range while keeping the weight ratio of the by-product i-butylbenzene to the objective substance at a low value. CONSTITUTION:Benzene is reacted with n-butene at 1:(0.4-1.1) molar ratio and a liquid AlCl3 complex catalyst is used in an amount so that AlCl3 used as a component thereof may be provided in an amount of 0.3-5wt.% (preferably 0.3-1wt.%) based on the benzene. Both are reacted at 20-90 deg.C in a reaction zone so that a by-product i-butylbenzene may be in an amount so as to provide <=0.01 weight ratio based on the produced subject substance. Thereby, the subject substance which is a raw material for producing phenol is obtained. The resultant reaction mixture is divided into a portion (A) consisting essentially of the benzene, a portion (B) consisting essentially of the subject substance, a portion (C) consisting essentially of dibutylbenzene and tributylbenzene and a portion (D) consisting essentially of heavy substances and the portions (A) and (C) are recycled to the reaction zone. |
