The long bar (2) of material is cut into precisely dimensioned lengths on a machine tool with two cutting stations (12,13). A circumferential groove (7) with a V-shaped profile is cut in the bar at the first station (12). The bar is then moved axially by the gripper (20) until it abuts against a stop (27). This movement of the bar (2) brings the groove (7) in line with the second tool (16) which then cuts right through the bar to produce the required length (3). At the same time the first tool cuts a second groove in the bar at the required distance from the newly cut end face (8). USE - Cutting bar material to required length.
