Piston for two=stroke IC engine - incorporates two diametrically opposite flats formed on skirt

The two-stroke IC engine (1) has relatively wide inlet and exhaust ports (2). In order to prevent the piston rings springing radially outwards as the piston passes over the ports (2) each port (2) is provided with a central vertical rib (3). These ribs (3) are likely to cause rubbing marks on the piston skirt. To prevent these marks being formed two small dia. opposite flats are formed on the piston skirt and extend axially over the area which would otherwise come into contact with the ribs (3). No material is removed from the piston top land. USE - Two-stroke IC engine.
