Disinfectant and preservative contains a glycol ether of formula RO-CH(C2H5)CH2OH (I). In (I), R is opt. branched, opt. cyclic 4-12C alkyl, the alkyl chain of which is opt. interrupted by up to 2 O atoms; 6-12C aryl, the aryl nucleus of which is opt. substd. by lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or halogen; or 7-13C aralkyl, the alkyl chain of which is opt. interrupted by up to 2 O atoms and the aryl nucleus of which is opt. substd. as above. USE/ADVANTAGE - The agent when diluted for use has practically no unpleasant smell and is environmentally friendly. The mild smell and good water-solubility of (I) allow for high concns. of active ingredient thus enabling very dirty areas to be treated. (I) have a broad spectrum of activity and are effective against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, fungi, mycobacteria and viruses.
