PRODUCTION OF DIHALOGENOPHTHALOPHENONE

PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound by a simple means without evolving a large amount of harmful gas by reacting a readily obtainable p-halogenobenzyl halide as a raw material with benzene and oxidizing molecular oxygen. CONSTITUTION:A p-halogenobenzyl halide shown by formula I (X<1> and X<2> are halogen) is reacted with benzene in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst to give an aromatic dihalide shown by formula II. Then the aromatic dihalide is oxidized with molecular oxygen in the presence of an oxidizing catalyst to give a dihalogenophthalophenone shown by formula III. p-Fluorobenzyl chloride or p-chlorobenzyl chloride is especially preferable as the p-halogenobenzyl chloride. The formed compound is suitable as a raw material for an aromatic polyether ketone having excellent heat resistance. The dihalogenophthalophenone can be produced efficiently and extremely economically from the inexpensive raw material by a simple means.
