The base for a height-adjustable, single-column table combines three guides (1) in the column at least one guide fitted with a gas spring (2). The guides are pref. in series and the guide and integral gas spring are joined via a brake (8). The brake is fitted with a cone (9) coupled to the spring, with two jaws movably mounted on the cone together with brake shoes (12, 13) on the radially outward sides of the jaws.
