Acrylonitrile is catalytically produced from bis-cyanoethylether by heating the latter in the presence of a minor quantity (i.e. up to 25% by wt.) of a quaternary alkyl ammonium hydroxide. The bis-cyanoethylether may be that obtained as impurity in the electrohydrodimerization of acrylonitrile to adiponitrile and it may also be contained in a stream comprised of acrylonitrile, adiponitrile, propionitrile and 3-hydroxypropionitrile; the stream is suitably heated to 70-250 DEG C. in the presence of the above quaternary alkyl ammonium hydroxide. 3-hydroxypropionitrile and other nitriles may also be produced by the process of the invention. |
