IC engine piston with variable compression height

The piston with a variable compression height has a crown (3) with rings sliding axially on a base portion (2) accommodating the gudgeon pin. Control and damping chambers (8,9) filled with pressurised oil are connected by a non-return valve with a by-pass throttle, their vol. altering as the crown slides. The control chamber (8) is supplied with oil via a second non-return valve, the oil being discharge from it by a pressure relief valve. The non-return valve, and/or the one between the chambers, is formed by a flexible strip(s) masking the inlet or outlet ports.
