Hydrophobically modified cellulose ethers (I), contg. 6-25 hydrophobic gps. (II) substd. by alkyl, alkoxy or ' alkylimino-carbonyl, 3-alkoxy-2-hydroxypropyl and 2-alkyl-2-hydroxyalkyl, are used, as stabilisers in aq. -coal slurries(III). Aq. -coal slurry contg. (I) and opt. usual additives eg. wetting- or defoaming-agents, salts, bases and other similar cpds. is also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) .guarantees longer stability of aq. -coal slurries, partic. during transport and storage.
