An electric reluctance machine has a rotor 12 and a stator core 10 and a set of coils 18 embracing stator poles to energise them. In between the stator poles are spaces in which adjacent lengths of the embracing coils lie. Between adjacent coils sharing a common space the stator core is formed into a projection 22 extending radially towards the rotor. The projection increases the contact area between the coil and the stator. This has the effect of reducing the thermal resistance between the two. Consequently, the coil current can be increased, giving a greater maximum motor output. Furthermore, the overall stiffness of the stator core is increased by the presence of the projections. |
