PRODUCTION OF FUNCTIONAL SILICA GLASS

PURPOSE:To obtain the title glass with little impurities by heating a porous vitreous matrix impregnated with an oxide additive-contg. solution in an atmosphere made up of a dehydrating agent gas, oxygen and an inert gas to make the matrix transparent. CONSTITUTION:Firstly, a porous vitreous matrix is impregnated with a solution containing an oxide additive and/or a compound convertible thereto. Thence, the resulting matrix is heated in an atmosphere made up of a dehydrating agent gas and an inert gas (and oxygen) and dehydrated and made transparent, thus obtaining the objective functional silica glass with the oxide additive dispersed therein. From the present silica glass. optical fiber with low loss can be obtained.
