Maleinimides of formula (I) and their salts are new. R1 and R2 are each H, optionally branched 1-18C alkyl, benzyl (optionally substituted by not more than 3 of 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy or halogen), not more than 12C aminoalkyl (optionally N-substituted by benzyl or 1-4C) alkyl or in which the N-substituents form a 3-6C heterocyclic ring (in which the alkylene chain of 1-4C alkyl residues are optionally substituted by OH or 1-4C alkoxy), not more than 6C epoxyalkyl, not more than 6C alkoxy-carbonylalkyl, -CH2-CO-NR11R12 (R11 and R12 each are H, 1-6C alkyl or benzyl), haloalkyl or hydroxyalkyl each optionally substituted by halogen, optionally not less than 2 OH group-substd. not more than 6C alkoxyalkyl, 1-4C acyl or a glycoside residue. R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8, R9 and R10 are each H, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, 1-4C acyloxy, halogen, nitro, amino (optionally substituted by not more than 2 of benzyl or 1-4C alkyl), benzyloxy, hydroxy, not more than 12C aminoalkoxy (optionally N-substituted by not more than 2 of benzyl and 1-4C alkyl) or forming a 3-6C heterocyclic ring (optionally substituted by 1-4C alkyl, OH, 1-4C alkoxy or CF3) or 2 of the groups together form methylenedioxy. Provisos are that R1-R10 are not all H and that when R4 and R9 are both OH the rest are not all H.
