A flame-retardant composition is obtained by blending together an organic polymeric plastic material, finely divided antimony oxychloride or antimony pentoxychloride having an average particle size of 4-100 microns and a thermally unstable chlorine-containing material (as defined). The ingredients are preferably present in the following proportions: organic polymeric plastic material 100 parts by weight, antimony compound 0.5 to 55 parts by weight, chlorinecontaining material 0.5-55 parts by weight. The thermally unstable chlorine-containing material, which may also function as the organic polymeric plastic material may be polyvinyl chloride, chlorinated paraffin wax, chlorinated terphenols and chlorinated rubber. Organic polymeric plastics materials exemplified are:-polyethylene, polyvinylchloride, polystyrene, chlorinated polyester styrene resin, polypropylene. |
