To wind an air-core coil, side frames 17, 22 are advanced about a retractable winding core, and wire is wound about the core and between the frames which are now spaced the width of the core to be wound. Adhesive is applied to the wire at 23. When the side frames and core are retracted, the wound coil is stored in pocket behind and rotatable with the advanced core. The reset coil is then wound without breaking the wire leading to the last-wound coil. Alternatively (Figs. 5 and 6) side frame 17 is replaced by a capstan having one winding core projecting from each of its faces, each face being indexed round to face frame 22 successively. Wound coils are left on their cores, with wire running to the next coil being wound.

|
