A method of manufacturing slabs or strips suitable for use as wall or floor panels comprises (a) successively depositing two or more gellable synthetic resin compositions on a support, each composition being gelled and cooled before deposition of the next succeeding composition. (b) heating the superposed layers to fuse adjacent layers, (c) cooling the fused layers and (d) stripping the cooled fused layers from the support, the first layer of gellable composition deposited being such that it is transparent when gelled and the final layer of gellable composition deposited being a composition comprising a blowing agent which is activatable during heating such that a foamed structure is finally formed. Advantageously, a coloured synthetic resin composition is deposited on the gelled first composition in any desired pattern e.g. by means of an engraved roller, to form an ornamental layer visible through the transparent outer layer. A plurality of different coloured compositions may also be used to form an ornamental layer of more than one colour. Preferably, a gallable third synthetic resin composition is applied to the ornamental layer to serve as a background thereto. Alternatively, the second composition deposited may be gelled, and part of it may be removed in accordance with a pattern so as to expose parts of the gelled first composition. A coloured third composition is then applied and serves as the ornamental layer. The coloured synthetic resin composition serving as the ornamental layer may be based on a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer and it may be in the form of a gellable composition or a fusible powder. The first and final gellable compositions may comprise polyvinyl chloride. As shown, a gellable first synthetic resin composition is cast on to an endless conveyor belt 1 acting as a support, levelled by scraper 2, gelled inside kiln 3, and cooled by air at 4. The first layer is passed under engraved cylinder 5, which has recesses containing a second synthetic resin composition (Fig. 3, not shown). The second synthetic resin composition is deposited, dried, gelled and cooled. A third synthetic resin composition is applied by means of a scraper 8, and it is gelled at 9 and cooled at 10. A final synthetic resin composition is applied by means of scraper 11 and heated at 12. The four superposed layers are then heated in kiln 13 to effect fusion of adjacent layers, passed under roller 14 to obtain the desired thickness and cooled at 15. Reference numerals 19 denote chimneys. In an alternative method, a coloured second synthetic resin composition in a finely divided state may be sprayed over the gelled and cooled first layer. The slab or strip may be glued to any support, e.g. a floor or wall.</p>
