<p>A control unit (10) covers all main control functions. It contains two voltage sources (11,12), a clock signal generator (13), a buffer (14) for temporary storage of print data, and a parallel/series converter (15) for print data. A second control unit (20) incorporates a parallel/series converter (21) for print data together with a memory in a logic block (23), and a drive stage for the individual needles in the printing head via coils (25.1-25.n). The cable connected to the printing head has six conductors, the first (8.1) of which serially transmits print data to the head end of the cable. A second conductor (8.2) transmits a clock signal, whilst a third (8.3) feeds voltage to the logic block (22). A fourth conductor (8.4) is for the earth of the logic block. A fifth conductor (8.5) feeds drive voltage to the drive circuits (24.1-24.n), and a sixth conductor (8.6) is for the drive circuit earth.
