Bituminous coal is gasified and liquefied in a combined process that gives increased thermal efficiency and includes the steps of hydroliquefaction, oxidative gasification to make synthetic gas, and use of the shift reaction to produce addnl. H from the synthetic gas. Thus, dry pulverized bituminous coal is mixed with a recycle solvent-contg. slurry from the process and hydrogenated at 820-870≦̸C. The product is sepd. by atm. and vacuum distn., and the residue from the vacuum distn. is gasified with O to give synthetic gas (H/CO=0.6:1). The synthetic gas is passed through a shift reactor to produce addnl. H, and the gas after purifn. is reaycled to the liquefaction step.
