1,127,249. Fire retardant synthetic resin compositions. HOOKER CHEMICAL CORP. 24 Nov., 1965 [25 Nov., 1964], No. 49911/65. Headings C3B, C3P and C3R. Compositions comprise (1) a normally combustible polymer, (2) a constant fire retardant agent of formula wherein X is bromine, chlorine or fluorine; Y is bromine, chlorine, fluorine, alkyl or alkoxy and Z is a tetravalent cyclic hydrocarbon having at least five carbon atoms and (3) a stabilizer for the fire retardant agent. Specified polymers are polymers of olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbons, butadiene/styrene/acrylonitrile copolymers, diallyl phthalate polymers, polyamides, polyesters, polycarbonates, phenol/ aldehyde condensates and bisphenol A/epichlorohydrin condensates. The fire retardant may have a M.P. > 250� C. and V.P. < 0�1 mm./ Hg at 197� C. and may be a Diels-Alder adduct of a polyhalogenated cyclopentadiene, e.g. hexachloro-, 5,5-dimethoxytetrachloro-, hexabromo-, 5,5 - di - fluorotetrachloro -, 5,5 - dibromotetrachloro- or 5,5-diethoxytetrachloro-cyclopentadiene; with a polyunsaturated cycloaliphatic compound, e.g. cyclopentadiene, methylcyclopentadiene, dicyclopentadiene, bicyclo-(2.2.1)- heptadiene, 1,5-cyclo-octadiene, cyclodecadiene or cyelododecadiene. Many suitable stabilizers and combinations thereof are specified including (1) polyvalent metal salts of benzoic and substituted benzoic acids, polyvalent metal substituted phenolates and organic phosphites; (2) substituted phenols, polyvalent metal salts of carboxylic acids and polyhydric alcohols; and (3) organotin compounds. Compounds of arsenic, antimony and bismuth may also be incorporated, e.g. the oxides, antimony sulphide, antimony salts of organic acids and alkali metal salts and esters of antimonous acids. Examples describe compositions comprising an adduct of hexachlorocyclopentadiene and 1,5-cyclo-octadiene, antimony oxide and (1) polypropylene and dibutyl tin bis (iso-octyl maleate), dibutyl tin maleate, dibutyl tin diacetate, dibutyl tin dilaurate or a barium benzoate/cadmium benzoate/phenol/polyol composition; (2) polystyrene and dibutyl tin maleate, dibutyl tin diacetate, dibutyl tin dilaurate, tetraphenyl tin, dibutyl tin bis(iso-octyl maleate) or a barium benzoate/cadmium benzoate/phenol/ polyol composition; (3) ABS terpolymer and dibutyl tin bis(iso-octyl maleate), dibutyl tin dilaurate, tetraphenyl tin, triphenyl tin hydroxide, dibutyl tin diacetate or stannous octoate; (4) polycaprolactam and dibutyl tin bis(isooctyl maleate), tetraphenyl tin, dibutyl tin dilaurate or barium/cadmium laurate; and (5) polyethylene and dibutyl tin bis iso-octyl maleate) or dibutyl tin dilaurate. |
