PURPOSE:To attain high-definition image recording and reproduction by providing an intensity modulating means which modulates beam intensity in the optical path between a light source and an image formation optical system so that an integrated light quality in a perpendicular direction is a desired value. CONSTITUTION:The beam projected from a light source 1 such as a semiconductor laser is put in scanning operation by an optical deflecting means such as a rotary polygon mirror 4 and converged by an image formation optical system on the scanned surface of a photosensitive drum 8, etc. Then the intensity modulating means 2 which modulates the beam intensity is provided in the optical path between the light source 1 and image formation optical system so that the integrated light quantity in the perpendicular direction is the desired value as to scanning beam position displacement perpendicular to the scanning direction on the scanned surface. Therefore, an irregularity in the quantity of beam spot light due to the beam displacement, etc., in a subscanning direction can be adjusted in terms of energy. Consequently, the formation of a high picture quality image is made possible. |
