METHOD FOR MODIFYING WHISKER SURFACE

PURPOSE:To uniformly and firmly modify the surface of a whisker by depositing specified grains on the surface. CONSTITUTION:From 95 to 70wt.% of the whisker as the vapor-grown carbon fiber having >=0.1mum diameter and <=300 aspect ratio and 5-30wt.% of at least one kind selected from ceramic grains (e.g. AlN) having 0.02-0.5mum diameter, plastic grains (e.g. PS) having 0.1 to several mum diameter and metallic grains (e.g. Al) having 0.02-0.5mum diameter and made of the same kind of material as the material forming the matrix of the composite material contg. the whisker or the material having affinity for the material forming the matrix are supplied to an agitating and mixing device provided with a vessel 3 having a self- circulating circuit 1 and an impeller 2, agitated and mixed by high-speed rotation and high-speed impact to deposit the grains on the whisker surface.
