A housing for a large electric machine (1) is provided with longitudinal beads (5) or logs (5a) on opposite sides of its periphery either by welding or cast in during mfr. After an initial positioning of the housing (1) on the machine table by means of a stops (3), holding fixtures with jaw clamps (4) are engaged with the beads (5) or lugs (5a) to provide accurate and stable location without radial stress during machining. Lifting eyes (6) are provided for crane manipulation during setting and hydraulic/pneumatic carriers (2) can be independently employed to ensure symmetrical weight or thrust support. USE/ADVANTAGE - During boring, grinding or milling of large cylindrical housings for electrical machines. System does not distort cylindrical form of housing by applying large radial forces during holding. Elastic recovery after machining with distortion of resultant bore is eliminated.
