The press for producing ceramic articles from ceramic powder has a mould (4) with a vertically sliding floor (2) which is pressed upwards by hydraulic pistons (17) to form the article. The pistons (17) have piston rods (18) which extend upwards to support the mould floor (2). Each piston (17) is mounted in a cylinder (16) with an external screw thread which screws into holes in the base plate (7). The cylinders (16) can be rotated by means of a worm (14) and wheel (15) drive to vary their vertical position and so vary the angle of inclination of the mould floor. This feature enables the floor to be covered with ceramic powder which varies in depth from one side to the other to produce articles with a corresponding variation in thickness.
