A fuel injection pump designed to deliver a quantity of fuel subdivided into a preliminary and a main quantity of fuel comprises a pump piston (16) which is guided inside a pump cylinder (14). The surface of the piston casing (25) has, in addition to two recesses (26, 27) delimited by an inclined control edge (28), a first horizontal control edge (33) formed by a frontal shoulder (31), and, on the side opposite the shoulder, a closed transverse groove (37) with a second and a third control edge (35, 36). Two control openings (22, 23) and an annular groove (41) above said openings in the wall of the pump cylinder (14) co-operate with said control edges to control the exactly established preliminary injection and then, after a delivery pause based on the difference (b-a) between the width (b) of the transverse groove (37) and the distance from the annular groove (41) to the control opening (23), the subsequent main injection. The control openings (22, 23) can be provided on the pump working chamber side with a straight limiting edge (34) for controlling an exact start of delivery which is essentially independent of the rotational speed as well as for controlling the preliminary and the main injection. |
