The invention relates to a process and a device for controlling and/or regulating the output of an internal combustion engine in a motor vehicle by monitoring a safety function which, in a dangerous operating situation, reduces the engine speed by influencing the fuel metering. To this end, the safety function is triggered during thrust operation of the internal combustion engine independently of the safety function and a test for correct execution is carried out. The safety function is recognized as faulty free if in this operating mode triggering of the safety function results in unrestricted fuel metering.
