METHOD OF IDENTIFYING HERPESVIRUSES AND OLIGONUCLEOTIDES FOR USE THEREIN

A method is provided for identifying herpes viruses. Oligonucleotides for use in the method are described which include dual primers and selective hybridization probes for polymerase chain reaction amplification and subsequent virus identification. At least four different viruses of the herpesvirus family can be distinguished, including Herpes simplex type 1, Herpes simplex type 2, Epstein-Barr virus, and cytomegalovirus.
