Prodn. of julolidine cpds. (I) involves reacting a 1,2-dihydro-quinoline (II) with a propane deriv. (III) or propylene oxide deriv. (IV) to a juloline cpd. (V); subjecting (V) to an elimination reaction in the presence of a base, giving a mixt. of 1H,5H-benzo(ij)quinolizine cpds. (VI) and (VII), and hydrogenating the mixt. of (VI) and (VII) to (I), where R1 and R2 independently = H, halogen, (substd.) 1-8 C alkyl, 1-8 C alkoxy, (substd.) phenoxy or 2-4 C alkanoylamino; R3 and R4 independently = H or (substd.) 1-8 C alkyl; R5 = (substd.) 1-8C alkyl; A1-4 = gps. eliminated as anions; Q = OH or A3. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are claimed for use in the prodn. of dyestuffs. They are useful e.g. as coupling components in the mfr. of azo dyestuffs, which are useful for dyeing e.g. cellulose, silk and esp. wool and synthetic polyamide textiles, giving level dyeing with good fastness. (I) are obtd. in good yields and purity.
