Light hydrocarbons, e.g., methane are converted to synthesis gas at elevated temperatures and pressures in the presence of a particulate catalyst, e.g., Ni/Al2O3. The conversion of feed to synthesis gas is preserved by rapidly cooling the reaction production to a temperature below that which favors the back reaction of carbon monoxide and hydrogen to form methane. |
