Apparatus for cutting or welding or simultaneously cutting and welding superimposed webs 16, 17 of thermoplastic synthetic sheet material comprises conveyer belts 12, 13 to engage one marginal edge of the webs 16, 17 therebetween, a bottom support 14 of good thermally conducting material for the thermoplastic material adjacent the marginal edge of the webs 16, 17 engaged by the conveyer belts 12, 13, a heatable knife 18 to co-operate with support 14 during cutting and welding, and a conveyer belt 20 running parallel to the belts 12, 13, guided by the support 14 and partaking in the cooling of the thermoplastic material in the vicinity of the knife 18 during cutting and welding. The endless belts 12, 13 run in grooves 10a, 11b in guide rails 10, 11. The knife 18 is of U-shape and projects into a groove 14a in the support 14 secured to the rail 10. Endless V- belts 20, 21 run in grooves 14c, 14b, respectively, of trapezium or V-section, in the support 14. Holding down strips 30, 32 are pivotally mounted to the rail 11 at one end by bolts (34), Fig. 2 (not shown), and are provided with endless V-belts 38, 40 running in grooves 30a, 32a. The belts 20, 21 project slightly above the support 14 and the belts 38, 40 project slightly below the strips 30, 32. The belts 20, 21, 38, 40 are driven and guided by metallic pulleys and are driven at the same speed as the belts 12, 13. Terminals 24, (26), the latter, Fig. 2 (not shown), are provided to be connected to a source of energy to heat the knife 18. During cutting and welding, heat is taken up by the parts 14, 30, 32 and transferred therefrom by the moving belts 20, 21, 38, 40 which are cooled externally of the guide grooves 14b, 14c, 30a, 32a by the metal pulleys and by the surrounding air. For operation at both sides of the webs 16, 17 the arrangement is duplicated. The webs 16, 17 may be completely separate pieces or a double width sheet folded edge-to-edge. In a modification (not shown), the knife oscillates. |
