Three forward gear ratios, drive, neutral, reverse and parking positions are selected by a hand lever (3) movable between parallel paths (6, 8). In the shorter path (8) the next ratio upward (+) or downward (-) is selected by displacement from the middle position (M). The lever (3) is latched within either path by a rotatable roller (13) and a leaf spring (14) screwed (15) to an element (17) rotatable about orthogonal bolts (4, 5). The roller (13) enters one or other of two deformations (20, 21) in the spring (14). ADVANTAGE - More reliable spring latching device can be mfd. at low cost with simplified leaf spring.
