PURPOSE:To increase the yield of a triethylbiphenyl fraction by reacting biphenyl in the presence of an ethylating agent comprising a polyethylbenzene, a specific ethylating agent, and a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Biphenyl is reacted in the presence of an ethylating agent (A) comprising a polyethylbenzene in an amt. of more than 1.0 equivalent in terms of ethyl group based on one equivalent of biphenyl, an ethylating agent (B) comprising ethylene and/or an ethyl halide in an amt. of 7-20mol based on 1000mol of biphenyl, and a Friedel-Crafts catalyst at 90-140 deg.C to simultaneously effect transalkylation with the ethylating agent A and alkylation with the ethylating agent B, and thus biphenyl is converted into a product comprising ethylbiphenyls. The product is distilled and separated to give three heat media, a monoethylbiphenyl fraction a diethylbiphenyl fraction and a triethylbiphenyl fraction. |
