An image producer reproduces the original document placed on the copying panel on the recording medium. A scanner is assigned to the panel. A projector transfers the scanned image to the image producer. The scanner is moved in two directions to cover the original document. A detector ascertains the speed of movement on the basis of a signal supplied by a signal generator. - A confirmation arrangement establishes if the scanner is in a deceleration mode or not on the basis of the generated signal. A control stops the drive when the scanner changes from deceleration to acceleration mode or if it is ascertained that the detected speed of movement is equal to or smaller than a preset speed.
