The shaft seal (1) has a housing (2) metallic, and a polymeric seal (3), having one end (6) fixed to the housing and the other (7) sealing against a shaft. The sealing end is separated into a protecting lip (9) and a sealing lip (10) by a radial cut (8). The cut is inclined (angle alpha) to the seal axis (a), such that, before assembly, the sealing lip axial thickness decreases away from the shaft surface. The open end of the cut is at a dia. corresponding to that of the shaft. ADVANTAGE - Reduced friction between seal and shaft.
