1,240,606. Polymeric phenol ethers. VIANOVA KUNSTHARZ A.G. 2 May, 1969 [2 May, 1968], No. 22573/69. Heading C3R. Polymeric phenol ethers are prepared by reacting a phenol dialcohol of the general formula or where R is alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, R 1 is H, halogen or alkyl and n is 1 to 4, with an organic di- or tri-hydroxy compound in a ratio of m mols of phenol to m + 1 mols of di- or trihydroxy compound, at 120‹ to 200‹ C. Among examples of phenol dialcohols are compounds in which R carries a carboxyl group. Preferred hydroxy compounds are glycerol, hexane-1,3,5- triol, trimethylol propane and ethane, glycols, polyethylene glycols, 2,2-bis-(4-#-hydroxy propyloxy phenyl)-propane and hydrogenated bisphenol. Ester, carboxylic acid and amino derivatives are also mentioned. In a modification, the phenolic hydroxy may be blocked before the etherification by reacting with monoepoxides, acid chlorides or halogen carboxylic acids or with fatty acids via the acetyl derivative. In Example 10, an acidic resin is dissolved in ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, neutralized with ammonia and diluted with water to give a clear solution which stoves at 170‹ C. to a hard film. |
