A length of tape 38 is wrapped to form a supply roll 28 and a take-up roll 27 which are driven by engagement with a resilient portion 37 of an annular rotating body 26 which is driven in turn by means of a resilient driving interface formed between a rotating drive element, e.g. a capstan 17, and a portion of the body 26 flanking the first portion 37, e.g. rubber-tyred flanges 33. The tape and the rotating body 26 are contained in a cartridge 11, the two tape rolls being mounted in pivoted carriages 23, 24 and urged against the body 26 by a spring 46. The thrust on the take-up roll is increased by means of a rod 19 urged by a spring 21, and the tape drive may be reversed by inverting the cartridge. In an alternative construction (Fig. 8) the capstan drive may be reversed, the extra thrust on the take-up roll being provided by one or other of two solenoids (91, 92). After passing a latch (69, Fig. 2), the cartridge 11 is held in place by the operation of a solenoid (64). |
