PURPOSE:To orient a liquid crystal with a high degree by using a thin film consisting of the polymer of diester of itaconic acid and subjecting the film to a rubbing treatment. CONSTITUTION:The thin film contg. the iterative unit of the diester of itaconic acid expressed by formula I is oriented by subjecting the thin film to the rubbing treatment. For example, substrates 11 for orienting the liquid crystal are constituted of the glass substrate 11b coated with an ITO film 11a and the liquid crystal oriented film 11c, the surface of which is subjected to the rubbing treatment. In the formula I, R1 and R2 denote the same or different groups, at least one group of which denotes 3 to 12C branched alkyl group, cycloalkyl group of the same number of carbon atoms, 2 to 6C substd. alkyl group having the substituent of 3 to 14C cyclic structure. The orientability, chemical stability and thermal stability of the liquid crystal soluble in an org. solvent of a low b. p. and relatively low polarity are improved in this way. |
