This gear change device (1) for an automatic transmission of a motor vehicle influenced by an electronic control instrument comprises a selector lever (3), which can be swivelled in two channels (6, 8). In the first channel (6) operating positions and automatically changing gears can be selected by means of the selector lever (3); in the second channel (8) individual gears - step-by-step changing - can be selected in such a way that from a centre position of the selector lever (3) it is possible to change up and back. The individual gears are selected by means of the selector lever (3) via electronic sensors (9, 10). These sensors (9, 10) are formed by switches (11, 12) which act in concert with devices endeavouring to hold the selector lever (3) in its neutral middle position (M).
