PURPOSE:To unnecessitate mechanical scan and to realize very fast access by providing a reflection medium arranged in prescribed arrangement in the waveguide of an optical storage medium, and detecting a reflected optical signal. CONSTITUTION:In the optical waveguide 2 of the optical storage medium, the reflection media 3 for an electrode which reflects part of propagation light are provided at every prescribed distance L corresponding to stored information. When a voltage is applied to the medium 3 and the refractive index of the medium 3 is varied, the information is recorded, and a short optical pulse from an optical pulse generator 1 is made incident on the waveguide 2 via a directional coupler 4, and when a reflected wave is detected at a signal detector 5, a storage content is read out based on a time from the incidence of the optical pulse to the detection of a reflected pulse. As a result, no mechanical scan is required, and very fast readout access can be performed. |
