PROCESS AND CATALYST FOR PRODUCTION OF A BISPHENOL The invention relates to a process for preparing a bisphenol comprising contacting at least two moles of a phenol per mole of a ketone in the presence of a sulphonated cation-exchange resin having a plurality of sulphonic acid sites ionically-bound to a group of the formula in which each of a and b is an integer from O to 5 and each R individually represents, H, OH, SH or alkyl. The catalyst exhibits high activity and selectivity at moderate reaction temperatures, low production of colored impurities, and high stability. The catalyst is particularly useful for the reaction of phenol and acetone to produce bisphenol-A. |
