<p>PURPOSE:To make a large-capacity display with many gradations and to improve the visual angle dependency by grouping picture elements of respective display units into subgroups, supplying binary data to the respective display units through data signal lines, and assigning and connecting the respective data lines to all the picture elements in the subgroups. CONSTITUTION:The display units 1 each consisting principally of (n-1) picture elements which makes a binary display, i.e. an on display and an off display and (m) data signal lines 11 which supply (m)-bit binary data makes (n)- gradational displays. Here, n = 2<m> and (n) and (m) are natural numbers. The respective picture elements in each display unit 1 are applied with an on voltage or off voltage between couples of electrodes and liquid crystal is so driven to transmit or not to transmit light; and no intermediate voltage is applied. Consequently, a gradational display and a large-capacity display are both realized at the same time by using a liquid crystal material which has narrow threshold voltage width and the display screen 10 can be viewed at a large visual angle.</p> |
