Novel 5-alkoxy-2,4-diamino-alkyl benzenes having the general formula (I) wherein R1 represents methyl or ethyl and R2 represents an alkyl radical containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms, a monohydroxyalkyl radical containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms or a dihydroxyalkyl radical containing 3 to 4 carbon atoms, as well as their acid addition salts and agents for the oxidative dyeing of hair which contain compounds having the formula (I).
